Society wants you to stay average. They want you to accept a basic paycheck and maybe one vacation a year if you are lucky. When you ask for more, people call you greedy. But the real greed is a system that keeps you at the bottom while the rich enjoy total freedom.

I knew I wanted to be rich from a young age. In my early 20s, I quit my job and worked my way up to becoming a multimillionaire. I know what it takes to build wealth and keep it growing. If you are tired of the lies about money, you need a real plan to escape the rat race.

Many young people feel frozen because of too many choices. Should you try dropshipping, crypto, or day trading? When you are scared to pick the wrong path, you end up picking nothing. That is the biggest mistake you can make. If you don’t choose your direction, life chooses it for you, and life usually chooses “broke.”

Stage 1: Drifting – The Passive Path to Remaining Broke

Drifting is what happens when you float through life. You let things happen to you instead of steering the ship. People in this stage move from one job to another or try a random side hustle for two weeks. They hope they will strike it big one day, but they have no real plan.

There is a famous quote that says if you aren’t building your own dream, someone will hire you to build theirs. That is the drifter’s reality. Nobody wakes up wondering how to make someone else rich. The only person who puts your success first is you.

Many people hide their drifting by saying “money doesn’t buy happiness.” This is a lie told to the poor to keep them compliant. Money equals freedom, and freedom equals happiness. A drifter might win the lottery or get a handout, but they never build wealth on their own merit.

Be honest with yourself right now. Do your daily actions match your ambition? If you say you want to be rich but spend your time drifting, you will stay average.

Stage 2: Obsession – Committing to Wealth Creation Above All Else

You can change your life with one single decision. You have to stop being pushed around and become obsessed with getting rich. This choice changes your entire trajectory. It might take a few months to see results, but the mindset shift happens instantly.

Some people cringe at the word obsession. They think wanting money is shameful. But money allows you to live on your own terms. It stops other people from controlling your time and your life.

True obsession is different from arrogance. I talk to many young people who say they want to be rich, but they also want to learn an instrument, run a marathon, and become fluent in a new language all at once. This is a trap.

Think about a professional football player. They don’t spend their training hours learning French or playing the violin. They focus on football because that is how you reach the top 1%. Becoming rich is just as hard. If I hadn’t locked in on wealth during my early years, I wouldn’t be a multimillionaire today.

Stage 3: Discovery – Decoding Proven Pathways to Value Creation

You get paid based on the value you provide. If you aren’t rich, you lack a high-value skill. You don’t need to be a genius or a revolutionary innovator to fix this. You just need to find something that is already working and learn how to do it too.

The fastest way to learn is to find someone who is already successful and copy their path. Some proven high-income skills include:

  • Short-form content creation
  • Video editing
  • Deal negotiating
  • Dropshipping
  • Running an eBay store

When I wanted to open my first radio-controlled model shop, I didn’t just guess. I got a Saturday job at a local shop. I acted like a sponge. I asked questions, talked to customers, and wrote down everything that was holding the owner back. I spent my Sundays talking to hobbyists to see what they actually wanted.

This is a cheat code. When you find a proven blueprint, you skip the mistakes the other person made. You progress faster because you aren’t guessing. Look for people who are making money through skills, not just because they have a big personal brand. Find them in Discord groups, on Instagram, or at local clubs.

Stage 4: Acceleration – The Grind, Feedback Loop, and Lonely Chapter

Once you have a path, you must start. This is the acceleration stage. Get in as much practice as possible, even if you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing. If you are selling a service, do free work to build a portfolio. If you are selling products, launch your first store today.

You have to be willing to suck at first. You cannot be great without being bad first. To speed up this process, you need constructive criticism. Most people ask their friends and family for feedback. This is a mistake. Your family doesn’t want to hurt your feelings, and they usually aren’t experts in the field.

You need honest, brutal feedback from people who know more than you. This helps you pivot when you are going the wrong way. If you keep doing the same thing, you will keep getting the same average results.

This part of the process is often called the lonely chapter. You will start to feel disconnected from your childhood friends because they don’t share your ambition. At the same time, you aren’t successful enough yet to hang out with the people you look up to.

My son experienced this when he chose videography over university. He spent years grinding alone and refining his craft. He lost touch with old friends but gained a skill that paid off. Most people give up here and slip back into being average.

To survive the lonely chapter, find a community of people in the trenches with you. The motivation you get from peers who are also leveling up is more valuable than any video you watch online.

Stage 5: Freedom – Transitioning from Rich to Truly Wealthy

The most valuable investment you will ever make is yourself. You are the asset. The skills you build compound over time just like money. Once you master a high-income skill, you reach the freedom stage. You can work from anywhere and stop answering to a boss.

There is a big difference between being rich and being wealthy. Being rich means you have a high income. Being wealthy means you have assets that provide freedom.

When the big checks start coming in, you have two choices:

  1. Spend it all on flashy cars, designer clothes, and luxury trips to impress people.
  2. Reinvest a large percentage to build true wealth.

Truly wealthy people are not impressed by a young person with a fancy car. They see it as a waste of potential. Instead, build multiple income streams. This could be passive investments like index funds, crypto, or stocks. It could also be learning new skills that increase your earning power.

Poor people spend money to impress other poor people. Wealthy people reinvest in their businesses and their minds. Whatever you spend on meaningless things today is money you are stealing from your future self. Even when you reach freedom, keep reading books and learning. That has the highest return on investment.

Final Thoughts

Getting rich while you are young is not about luck. It is about a systematic shift in how you live and think. First, you must stop drifting and accept that wanting wealth is a path to freedom. Then, you must become obsessed. Stop trying to do ten different things and focus on one goal.

Use discovery to find a proven path. Don’t reinvent the wheel; just find someone who has already won and copy their blueprint. Once you have the plan, enter the acceleration phase. Embrace the grind, seek out brutal feedback, and push through the lonely chapter.

Finally, when the money arrives, don’t blow it on status symbols. Reinvest in yourself and your assets. If you can move from just being “rich” to being truly “wealthy,” you win the game of life. Stop drifting and start building today.
